It’s been a while since my last post, so firstly I must apologise. For those that follow my Instagram account, you would have noticed that I spent most of September following the European Fashion Week circuit shooting street style in London, Milan and Paris. This was my first year of covering September Fashion Month and to be quite honest, I was a little nervous to say the least. Even though I had photographed Australian Fashion Week in Sydney and various fashion events in Melbourne for the past year and a half, there’s really nothing that prepares you for September Fashion Month in Europe.
I started in London and in hindsight this was a great way of easing myself into the madness of Fashion Month. By the time I got to Milan, I had a fair idea of what to expect. To sum up my experience, it has been one hell of a ride! The pure volume of photographers and fashion folk is next level, out of this world. The scrums that form when an influential Blogger, Magazine Editor or Fashion Industry type arrives can only be likened to a Hollywood celebrity attracting a pack of paparazzi. In fact, it’s safe to say that street style photographers are the new paparazzi. Although I’d like to think that we are a little more civilized and less aggressive than our Hollywood counterparts. But still, we manage to spill on the streets and stop traffic. The thrill of getting the perfect street style shot fuels us into doing crazy things. I blame it on the adrenaline, running after your subject is the norm!
To summarise the street style scene in Europe, the biggest trend that I observed for women were sneakers, Adidas Stan Smiths, Nike Frees and Chanel. They were worn with dresses, skirts, pants, culottes, anything really. Fringing on bags, jackets, shawls and skirts was another big trend. Bold prints and floral were also popular as well as monochrome. For men, the biggest trend I noticed was slouchy pants with fitted suit jackets. Sneakers with suits, was also a popular combination.
This post contains some of my favourite shots in London, Milan and Paris. Another post will follow as I could not narrow it down to just 30 shots. One thing is for sure, this the first of many September Fashion Months that I plan to document. It will be an annual pilgrimage, with any luck, I’ll be starting in New York City next year!
